Map of Seville
One of the largest historic centres in Europe, set between a river and what was its wall. On the map of Seville, the old city is an almond of tangled streets on the banks of the Guadalquivir.
What you see on the map
The old town. A large almond whose edge is still marked by the ring road that replaced the wall. Inside, narrow, crooked streets, a Moorish legacy, opening into squares and convent courtyards.
The Cathedral and the Alcázar. In the south of the old town, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, with the Giralda, and beside it the gardens and courtyards of the Alcázar, a different pattern on the map.
The Guadalquivir. The river, actually a channelled arm, crosses the map from north to south with the Torre del Oro on the bank. Opposite, Triana, the potters' quarter, and to the north, La Cartuja island, site of Expo 92.
Plaza de España and María Luisa. To the south, the semicircle of the Plaza de España, built for the 1929 Exposition, beside María Luisa Park: a shape recognised instantly.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:15,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 4.2 km: the whole old town, Triana and the Plaza de España. Every building can be made out.
1:6,000 on A3 moves in on a district: Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter, with its alleys, or the whole of Triana.
A portrait rectangle follows the river from north to south and takes in La Cartuja and María Luisa Park at once.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: La Cartuja island with its pavilions, or the Macarena district with its wall, deserve a map of their own.
