Map of Salamanca
A golden city on a hill by the Tormes, with more convents, colleges and cathedrals than blocks of houses. On the map of Salamanca the great buildings are the pattern.
What you see on the map
The Plaza Mayor. The Churrigueras' eighteenth-century Baroque square: a large enclosed, arcaded quadrilateral in the middle of the map, with streets leading off in every direction.
The two cathedrals. The Romanesque Old Cathedral and the Gothic and Renaissance New Cathedral, joined to each other at the top of the hill, above the river.
The University and the Clerecía. The Escuelas Mayores, the oldest university in Spain, with its courtyard; opposite, the House of Shells, and beside it the Clerecía, which takes up a whole block.
The Tormes and the Roman bridge. The river closes the city to the south, wide and dotted with islands, crossed by the Roman bridge, still in use by pedestrians.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:9,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 2.5 km: the whole old town, from the river to the Plaza de Gabriel y Galán. Every building and cloister can be made out.
1:4,000 on A4 moves in on the Plaza Mayor or the cathedrals, with every courtyard.
In coral, as here, it recalls the Villamayor stone, golden at sunset; in sepia, an old plan.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: the convent of San Esteban and the Garden of Calixto and Melibea, by the wall, deserve a more detailed map.
