Map of Budapest
Two cities, one on each side of the Danube, that joined in 1873. The difference shows on the map: Buda, with hills and streets that wind around them; Pest, flat and ordered in rings.
What you see on the map
The Danube. Broad and almost straight, it crosses the map from north to south. The bridges stitch it together: the Chain Bridge, the first; Elisabeth Bridge, Liberty Bridge and, to the north, Margaret Bridge, which bends at an angle to touch the island.
Buda. On the right bank, Castle Hill, long and walled, with the palace and the Fishermen's Bastion; to the south, Gellért Hill, with the citadel on top.
Pest. On the left bank, Parliament by the water and, behind it, a city in rings: the Little Boulevard on the old wall and the Grand Boulevard, a semicircle running from bridge to bridge, cut by Andrássy Avenue, straight to Heroes' Square.
Margaret Island. It peeks in from the north: a long park in the middle of the river that looks like a leaf on the map.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:18,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 5 km: the castle, Parliament and the whole Grand Boulevard. Buildings can still be made out.
1:8,000 on A3 moves in on Castle Hill or Pest's Jewish quarter, with every courtyard.
At night, as here, the dark river and light lines recall the city lit up; in black ink it looks more restrained.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: City Park, with the Széchenyi baths, or the whole of Margaret Island deserve a map of their own.
