Map of Granada
Two hills facing each other, separated by a river: on one, the Alhambra; on the other, the Albaicín. At their feet, the Christian city. Few cities show the layers of their history so well on a map.
What you see on the map
The Alhambra. On the Sabika hill, a walled compound as long as a ship: the Alcazaba at the bow, the Nasrid palaces and the palace of Charles V, with its circular courtyard, in the middle. To the east, the Generalife gardens.
The Albaicín. On the opposite hill, the old Moorish quarter: a maze of narrow streets, slopes and cármenes, houses with gardens behind a wall. On the map it is a fine, tangled texture.
The Darro. The river running between the two hills along the Carrera del Darro, and further up, to the east, the Sacromonte, with its cave houses on the hillside.
The centre. Below, the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel, the Gran Vía cut straight through in the early twentieth century and the Realejo, the old Jewish quarter, at the foot of the Alhambra.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:10,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 2.8 km: the Alhambra, the Albaicín and the centre. Every building can be made out.
1:5,000 on A3 moves in on the Alhambra alone, with every courtyard and tower, or on the Albaicín with all its alleys.
A topographic map at 1:10,000 shows what the aesthetic one does not paint: the contour lines of the two hills and the Darro valley.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: the Granada plain, with Sierra Nevada behind it on a topographic map, or the Zaidín district, deserve a map of their own.
