Map of Ávila
The best-preserved medieval wall in Europe still surrounds the whole city, without a gap. On the map it is a crisp outline, a rectangle of stone with the city inside.
What you see on the map
The wall. Two and a half kilometres of wall, built mostly in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, with nearly ninety semicircular towers that give it a toothed edge on the map.
The gates. Nine of them, spread around the perimeter. The Alcázar and San Vicente gates, to the east, are the most monumental, flanked by two great towers.
The Cathedral. Its apse, the cimorro, is built into the wall itself, like one more tower: on the map you can see the church forming part of the wall.
Outside the walls. To the east, the basilica of San Vicente and the Mercado Grande square; to the west, the slope down to the river Adaja, with its bridge and the Cuatro Postes on the far bank.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:7,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 2 km: the whole wall with a little city around it. Every tower can be made out.
1:4,000 on A4 fits the wall closely and shows every house and courtyard inside.
With the original colours, as here, the city inside stands apart from the outskirts; in sepia, it looks like an old plan.
Make it yours
Open the example and try other walled towns: Lugo, with its round Roman wall, or Carcassonne, in the gallery, have the same charm.
