Map of Cádiz
A city on the tip of a tongue of land, with the sea on three sides. On the map it is almost an island: a tight old town of straight streets and, all around it, water.
What you see on the map
The old town. Compact and surprisingly orderly: narrow, nearly straight streets crossing at an angle, with the squares as clearings. The quarters appear with their names: La Viña, El Pópulo, Santa María, El Mentidero.
The edge. The wall and its bastions still mark the outline facing the Atlantic, and to the west you can see La Caleta beach and the castles that guard it.
The harbour. On the other side, facing the bay, the docks: large straight shapes that contrast with the fine grain of the old city.
Puerta de Tierra. The isthmus where the old town ends and the new city begins, stretching south between two seas.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:12,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, takes in the whole old town with the harbour and the start of the new city. At that scale every building is drawn.
1:5,000 on A3 is already a street plan: the old town alone, with every block and every square.
The sea is half the map. Shore lines fill it, and they are what draws the shape of the city, so give it room: a circle or a square format works better than a very long one.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: go down towards Puerta de Tierra and the long beaches of the new city, or cross the bay to El Puerto de Santa María.
