Map of Santiago de Compostela

The end of the Way is a stone city shaped like an almond. The streets of the old town run in parallel towards the Cathedral, and the map shows that everything in Santiago converges on it.

What you see on the map

The old town. The medieval wall has gone but left its shape behind: an oval stretched from north to south, ringed by the road that followed its line. Inside, one of the best-preserved historic cities in Europe.

The Cathedral and its squares. The great mass of the Cathedral, surrounded by four squares: the Obradoiro to the west, the Quintana to the east, the Platerías to the south and the Azabachería to the north. On the map they are the only large voids in the old town.

The rúas. Rúa do Franco, Rúa do Vilar and Rúa Nova run south in parallel, linked by alleys; along them the French Way comes in to the Cathedral.

The convents and the Alameda. San Martiño Pinario, with its cloisters, and other great convents draw rectangles within the pattern; to the west, the Alameda park, from where the whole Cathedral can be seen.

Which scale and paper suit it

1:7,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 2 km: the whole old town with its ring road. Every building and every cloister can be made out.

1:3,500 on A4 moves in on the Cathedral and its four squares, with every house on the rúas.

With the original colours, as here, the stone old town stands apart from the new city; in sepia, it looks like an old plan.

Make it yours

Open the example and move the frame: Monte do Gozo, where pilgrims first see the city, or the City of Culture, on top of Mount Gaiás, deserve a map of their own.

Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, coral, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
