Map of Sydney
A harbour shaped like an open hand, full of coves and peninsulas, and a city looking out over all of them. On the map of Sydney, the water draws as much as the streets.
What you see on the map
The harbour. Port Jackson reaches inland along a winding course: each cove, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, Farm Cove, Woolloomooloo, is a finger of water between peninsulas.
The Opera House. At the tip of Bennelong Point, by Circular Quay, the building of shells, surrounded by water on three sides.
The bridge. The Harbour Bridge crosses from one shore to the other, linking the centre with North Sydney; at its foot, on the south shore, The Rocks, the city's oldest district.
The centre and the parks. The business district, with its irregular grid, between Darling Harbour and the large green patch of the Royal Botanic Garden and the Domain; to the south, Hyde Park.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:22,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 6.2 km: the central harbour, the bridge, the Opera House and the centre. Buildings can still be made out.
1:8,000 on A3 moves in on Circular Quay and The Rocks, with every wharf and street.
In blueprint, as here, the harbour looks like a nautical chart; in black ink, the coves stand out like cut-outs.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: Bondi Beach, to the east, or the harbour entrance between North Head and South Head deserve a map of their own.
