Map of Berlin
A great park, a winding river and a straight axis joining them: on the map, Berlin is a city of wide spaces, with its history written in the seams between districts.
What you see on the map
The Tiergarten. The great park to the west, crossed by the straight axis leading from the Victory Column, on its roundabout, to the Brandenburg Gate. Its paths and lakes draw a pattern unlike the city's.
Unter den Linden. The boulevard of lime trees, running east from the Brandenburg Gate to Museum Island, enclosed by two arms of the Spree.
The Spree. The river comes in from the west, wraps around the government quarter in a curve and continues south-east, with canals alongside: the Landwehr Canal crosses the city to the south, parallel to it.
Friedrichstadt. South of Unter den Linden, the eighteenth-century baroque grid, ending in geometric squares: round Mehringplatz and octagonal Leipziger Platz by Potsdamer Platz.
Which scale and paper suit it
1:25,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 7 km: from the Tiergarten to Alexanderplatz. At that scale the city is drawn as blocks, here with their outline, which shows the large Berlin courtyards.
1:10,000 on A3 moves in on a district: Mitte with Museum Island, or Kreuzberg with its canals.
A 50 × 70 poster at 1:40,000 takes in almost the whole city inside the S-Bahn ring.
