Map of Mexico City
Where Tenochtitlan once stood, in the middle of a lake, there is now a colonial grid, an imperial avenue heading diagonally to the park, and whole neighbourhoods shaped like an oval. It all fits in an eight-kilometre circle.
What you see on the map
The Historic Centre. The grid the Spanish laid over the Mexica city, with the Zócalo in the middle: one of the largest squares in the world, with the Cathedral and the National Palace.
The Alameda. West of the centre, the oldest park in the Americas, a green rectangle next to the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Paseo de la Reforma. The avenue Maximilian had built to link Chapultepec Castle with the centre. It crosses the map diagonally, with its roundabouts in a row, the Angel of Independence among them.
La Condesa and Chapultepec. In La Condesa, Avenida Ámsterdam traces an oval where a racecourse once stood, with Parque México inside; to the west, the great green mass of Chapultepec park.
Which scale and paper suit it
1:30,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 8 km: from the Zócalo to Chapultepec, with Roma and Condesa. At that scale the city is drawn as blocks.
1:10,000 on A3 moves in on the Historic Centre or La Condesa, with every building and the whole oval of the old racecourse.
In coral, as here, the pattern has the warmth of the city; in black ink it looks like an old plan.
