Map of Copenhagen
A city of water and fortifications. Copenhagen keeps its star-shaped bastions, its canals and a ring of lakes where the moat once was, and on the map it all reads like a drawing.
What you see on the map
The Kastellet. To the north, by the harbour, a seventeenth-century citadel shaped like a five-pointed star, surrounded by moats, one of the best preserved in Europe.
Christianshavn. Across the harbour, a district built on artificial islands, with its canals and a zigzag wall of bastions still running along its eastern edge.
Frederiksstaden and Nyhavn. The rococo district, with straight streets and the octagonal square of Amalienborg, surrounded by the four royal palaces; and beside it, Nyhavn, the canal of coloured houses.
Slotsholmen, Tivoli and the lakes. In the centre, the island of Christiansborg Palace, ringed by canals; to the south, the Tivoli gardens; and to the west, the chain of long lakes that follows the line of the old moat.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:16,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 4.5 km: the Kastellet, Christianshavn, the centre and the lakes. Buildings can still be made out.
1:6,000 on A3 moves in on the Kastellet and Frederiksstaden, or on Christianshavn with its canals.
In blueprint the water merges with the paper and the fortifications stand out as on a military plan.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: the free town of Christiania, inside the bastions, or the Nørrebro district, across the lakes, deserve a map of their own.
