Map of Porto

Two cities on the two banks of a river sunk between hillsides, joined by iron bridges at rooftop height. On the map of Porto the Douro sets the order for everything.

What you see on the map

The Douro. It crosses the map from east to west, narrow and deep, with streets dropping towards it in slopes and stairways. The water is filled with shore lines and separates the two cities.

The bridges. The two-deck Dom Luís I bridge links the Ribeira with Gaia both at river level and at the top of the slope; upstream, the Infante bridge and Eiffel's Maria Pia bridge.

The Ribeira and the Baixa. The quayside district, its houses crammed at the foot of the Sé, and higher up the Baixa, with Avenida dos Aliados, the Clérigos Tower and São Bento station.

Vila Nova de Gaia. On the south bank, the port wine lodges, large halls lined up along the river, and above them the round monastery of Serra do Pilar.

Make my map of Porto

Porto at 1:12,000 in night: the Douro and its bridges, the Ribeira, the Baixa and the wine lodges of Gaia.

Which scale and paper suit it

1:12,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 3.4 km: both banks, the three central bridges and the Baixa. Buildings can be made out one by one.

1:5,000 on A3 moves in on the Ribeira and the Dom Luís I bridge, with every house on the quay.

In night, as here, the river turns dark and the streets glow; in sepia, it looks like an old engraving.

Make it yours

Open the example and move the frame: the mouth of the Douro at Foz, with its lighthouse and beach, or the Arrábida bridge, downstream, deserve a map of their own.

Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, coral, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
