Map of Carcassonne
A whole medieval town held inside two walls, on top of a hill above the river Aude. Seen from above, the Cité of Carcassonne is an oval of stone with its castle, its church and its streets, and open country all around.
What you see on the map
The two walls. One ring inside another, with the space between them (the lists) drawn as a band that goes all the way round the town. The towers show as small bumps in the outline.
The Château Comtal. To the west, against the wall, with a moat of its own: the fortress inside the fortress.
The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, to the south, and the Porte Narbonnaise, the great east gate where you come in from the road.
The contrast. Inside, the tightly packed houses of the Cité; outside, the green hillside and, beyond, the district that grew at the foot of the hill.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:3,500 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture: the Cité fills the circle with a little countryside around it.
1:12,000 on landscape A3 takes in both Carcassonnes: the Cité on its hill and, across the Aude, the Bastide Saint-Louis, the gridded lower town.
In sepia, as here, it looks like a plan from an archive; in black ink it is denser, almost a pen drawing.
Make it yours
Open the example and try a wider framing so that the old bridge over the Aude, which has joined the two towns since the Middle Ages, fits in.
Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
