Map of Vienna
Where the wall stood, Vienna laid out a boulevard. The Ringstrasse circles the old town like a ring, and on the map it is a perfect horseshoe, closed by water.
What you see on the map
The Ringstrasse. In 1857 the emperor ordered the walls demolished, and in their place a horseshoe avenue more than five kilometres long was laid out, closed to the north-east by the Danube Canal. It is the shape that makes the map unmistakable.
The old town. Inside the ring, the Innere Stadt: medieval streets converging on St Stephen's Cathedral, and the Hofburg, the imperial palace, with its courtyards and Heldenplatz.
The buildings of the Ring. Along the avenue, in large freestanding blocks: the opera, parliament, city hall, the university, the twin museums. With their gardens, the Volksgarten and the Burggarten, they break the ring into pieces.
Outside the Ring. Beyond the ring, the nineteenth-century districts fan out; to the south, Karlsplatz and the Naschmarkt, the market that sits on the covered bed of the river Wien.
Which scale and paper suit it
1:10,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 2.8 km: the whole Ring with a little air around it. Every building is drawn with its outline.
1:5,000 on A3 stays inside the ring: the Innere Stadt with every courtyard and passage.
In black ink, as here, the map is almost an engraving; in sepia, an imperial plan.
