Map of Palm Jumeirah
An island drawn before it existed. Palm Jumeirah was built with sand from the floor of the Gulf following a design that can only be appreciated from the air: a palm tree inside a ring.
What you see on the map
The trunk. A straight strip leaving the coast and running out to sea, with a central avenue, buildings on either side and the monorail running along it end to end.
The fronds. Seventeen curved branches on either side of the trunk, lined with villas, each with its pool and private beach. On the map they form a fan of parallel lines: what makes the island recognisable.
The crescent. A curved eleven-kilometre breakwater that wraps around the fronds and shields them from the waves. At its apex, facing the trunk, the large hotel that crowns the island.
The water. Between the fronds and around everything, the sea, filled with shore lines, and to the south, the Jumeirah coast with its beaches and towers.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:22,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 6.2 km: the whole palm with the crescent and a little coastline. It is just the scale for the shape to show.
1:10,000 on A3 moves in on a few fronds, with every house and every jetty.
In coral, as here, the map has a seaside summer feel; in blueprint, that of an engineering project, which is what it was.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: Dubai Marina, to the south, or The World archipelago, with islands shaped like continents, deserve a map of their own.
Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, coral, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
