Map of Valletta
A narrow peninsula between two harbours, covered end to end by a grid and ringed by bastions. On the map, Valletta and the coast around it are a lace of land and water.
What you see on the map
The city. The Order of St John founded it in 1566, after the Great Siege of the year before, and it bears the name of its Grand Master, Jean de la Valette. Straight streets cross at right angles on a sloping peninsula, and the wall follows its whole edge.
St Elmo and Floriana. Fort St Elmo closes the tip, facing the open sea. At the other end, Floriana (Il-Furjana), the fortified suburb, with its own grid and gardens.
The two harbours. To the south-east, the Grand Harbour; to the north-west, Marsamxett, with Manoel Island and its fort in the middle. The water, filled with shore lines, reaches into every creek and draws the coast with all its indentations.
The Three Cities. Opposite, across the Grand Harbour, Birgu, Senglea (L-Isla) and Bormla, each on its own tongue of land, with Fort St Angelo at the tip of Birgu.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:15,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 4 km: the peninsula, both harbours and the Three Cities. Every bastion shows.
1:5,000 on A4 keeps Valletta alone, with every block of the grid.
In coral, as here, it recalls the island's limestone; in blueprint, a military engineer's plan.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: Mdina, the old walled capital in the middle of the island, deserves a map of its own.
Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, coral, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
