Map of Rome
Twenty-seven centuries of city in a four-kilometre circle. On the map of Rome a Roman stadium's square, Bernini's colonnade and nineteenth-century avenues sit side by side.
What you see on the map
The Tiber. It winds from north to south and separates the historic centre from the Vatican and Trastevere. In the middle, Tiber Island, the river's only islet, shaped like a ship.
The Vatican. St Peter's Square, with the elliptical colonnade embracing it and Via della Conciliazione running straight to the river; beside it, Castel Sant'Angelo, a cylinder inside a ring of bastions.
The historic centre. A maze in the river's bend, with traces of ancient Rome: Piazza Navona keeps the elongated shape of Domitian's stadium, and the Pantheon is a perfect circle among the blocks.
Ancient Rome. To the south-east, the Forum, the Palatine, the Circus Maximus (a long track on the map) and the oval of the Colosseum, beside Via dei Fori Imperiali cutting diagonally through them.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:15,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 4 km: from the Vatican to the Colosseum, with the whole historic centre. Every building can still be made out.
1:6,000 on A3 moves in on a single district: the centre between the Pantheon and Navona, or Trastevere with its alleys.
In sepia, as here, it recalls the engravings of Rome by Nolli or Piranesi; in black ink it looks more modern.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: Villa Borghese and its gardens, the Aventine or the Appian Way with its pines deserve a map of their own.
