Map of Prague
A broad river bending east, a castle high on one bank and an old town on the other, joined by a stone bridge. Prague fits entirely in a small circle.
What you see on the map
The Vltava. It crosses the map from south to north and turns sharply east. Its islands, long as leaves, and the series of bridges give it rhythm; Charles Bridge, from the fourteenth century, is the oldest.
The castle. On the left bank, on a long hill: a compound of courtyards and St Vitus Cathedral, with gardens descending in terraces towards the river.
Malá Strana. The Lesser Town, at the foot of the castle, with its baroque palaces, its hidden gardens and Petřín hill, a large green patch to the south.
Staré Město. On the right bank, the Old Town: crooked streets that open onto the square of the astronomical clock, the old Jewish quarter by the river and, around them, the arc of the New Town.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:12,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 3.4 km: from the castle to Wenceslas Square. Every building can be made out.
1:5,000 on A3 moves in on the Old Town or the castle, with every courtyard and alley.
A landscape rectangle follows the curve of the river and lets in Vyšehrad, the other fortress, to the south.
Make it yours
Open the example and move the frame: Vyšehrad, on its rock by the river, or Vinohrady, with its nineteenth-century avenues, deserve a map of their own.
