Map of Naarden
A star of water with a town inside. Naarden, near Amsterdam, is one of the best preserved bastion fortresses in Europe, and it looks as if it had been designed to be seen from above.
What you see on the map
The star. Six arrowhead bastions surround the town, with a moat in front of them; further out, another line of defences and a second moat. This is the seventeenth-century fortification, almost intact.
The water. The moats are what draws the shape: on the map, broad blue bands filled with shore lines that repeat every angle of the wall.
The town. Inside, an oval of orderly blocks around the main church, with every house drawn.
The green. The slopes of the fortress and the surrounding meadows, which set the star apart from the rest of the landscape.

Which scale and paper suit it
1:5,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, is just right: the whole star fills the circle.
1:2,500 on A3 goes into the town: the streets inside the wall and the nearest bastions, in full detail.
Better in a circle or a square. The shape is almost symmetrical and calls for a format that is too.
Make it yours
Open the example and try other colours: with the blueprint or the black ink theme, the star looks like a military engineer's engraving.
Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
