Map of Nördlingen

A round town, enclosed by a wall that survives in full, in the middle of a meteorite crater. It fits a circular map as if it had been made for it.

What you see on the map

The wall. An almost perfect ring of about 2.7 km that goes all the way round the old town, with its towers and its five gates. Outside, the green belt of the old moat follows it.

Rings and spokes. Inside, the streets run in circles that follow the wall and in spokes leading from the gates to the centre: a medieval spider's web.

St George's. At the centre, St George's church, with its tower, the Daniel, from which the whole ring can be seen.

The crater. The town lies inside the Ries, a crater some 25 km across left by a meteorite about fifteen million years ago. It does not show at this scale, but the museum that explains it is on the map, next to the wall.

Which scale and paper suit it

1:5,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers 1.3 km: the whole old town inside the circle, with a margin around it. Every house is drawn.

1:3,000 on A3 fills the paper with the wall, edge to edge.

In blueprint, as here, it looks like a surveyor's plan; in sepia, an old one.

Make it yours

Open the example and move the frame, or zoom out to 1:100,000 to see the rim of the Ries crater around it.
