Map of Hong Kong

Two shores packed to the edge with an arm of sea in between. Hong Kong is a city squeezed between water and mountain, and the map shows it: there is no gap without a street except where the slope forbids it.

What you see on the map

Victoria Harbour. The strait separating the Kowloon peninsula from Hong Kong Island takes up the middle of the map. Filled with shore lines, it reads as a ribbon crossing the circle from side to side.

Land taken from the sea. Much of the harbour edge is land reclaimed over more than a century: that is why the shore is so straight in Central and Wan Chai, and why the large, empty new ground shows up west of Kowloon.

Kowloon. To the north, Tsim Sha Tsui at the tip, with its comb of piers, and behind it Yau Ma Tei and Hung Hom: a dense, almost gridded pattern of streets.

The island. To the south, Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay form a narrow strip at the foot of the hill; above, Mid-Levels and the Peak dissolve into curves, and the oval of the Happy Valley racecourse stands out among the buildings.

Which scale and paper suit it

1:25,000 on a 30 cm square, as in the picture, covers about 7 km: the whole harbour with both shores. At that scale every building is drawn, and the density of the city is what fills the map.

1:10,000 on A3 moves in on Central or Tsim Sha Tsui, with every pier and every flyover.

In night colours, as here, the city glows over the dark water; in black ink it looks more graphic.

Make it yours

Open the example and move the frame: Aberdeen and the south coast of the island, or Mong Kok in northern Kowloon, deserve a map of their own.

Change all the colours at once with a theme (black ink, sepia, coral, night, blueprint) and download it as PNG. With a free account, also element by element, at 600 dpi, as vector PDF and as SVG.
